Happy Sunday!
Sloww Sunday is a new email newsletter sharing inspiration to awaken the art of living in all of us.
In a modern world focused on the trendy, here’s your weekly dose of the timeless.
1 // New on Sloww
Last week I mentioned that I’ve been going all-in on something exciting. And that is… Sloww is launching a new premium membership!
Many more details coming soon when it’s live in the next week or so, but I feel like I have some interesting ideas for premium content that will take the art of living to the next level.
In Case You Missed It—Here are some of my personal favorites:
- The Modern Art of Living: With Great Choice comes Great Responsibility
- Here’s to the Synthesizers: The Future Belongs to the Idea Connectors
- The Art of “New” Ideas: Combinatorial Creativity & Why Everything is a Remix
2 // Video I’m Watching
Abraham Maslow and Self Actualization (1968) (YouTube | 54 mins) — There are so many subtle gems here. I feel like the video just keeps getting better as it goes on, so feel free to skip ahead until something catches your attention. I especially enjoyed the parts about peak experiences and creativeness.
Self-actualization means the making real of the inner self … what you love, what you’re interested in, what excites you … and that is the cause outside yourself which paradoxically then becomes a defining characteristic of the self.
— Abraham Maslow
Pair with Maslow’s descriptions of self-actualization and transcendence.
3 // Speech I’m Listening To
Elon Musk’s Legendary Commencement Speech (YouTube | 16 mins) — Musk’s 2012 speech at the California Institute of Technology.
If we can advance the knowledge of the world—if we can do things that expand the scope and scale of consciousness—then we’re better able to ask the right questions and become more enlightened, and that’s really the only way forward.
— Elon Musk
Pair with Elon Musk’s (unbalanced) workweek to change the world and these 3 themes from the most-viewed commencement speeches.
4 // Article I’m Reading
How To Be An Adult (Medium | 9 mins) — A short overview of Dr. Robert Kegan’s Theory of Adult Development. Kegan, a former Harvard psychologist, shows that adults go through 5 distinct developmental stages. Apparently only 1% of the adult population is in Stage 5.
According to Kegan, becoming an adult isn’t about learning new things (adding things to the ‘container’ of the mind), it’s about transformation — changing the way we know and understand the world (changing the actual form of our ‘container’).
— Natali Morad
5 // Quote & Question I’m Contemplating
There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.
— Aldous Huxley
How’s your little corner of the universe?
Bonus // Something I’m Learning
Mental Model:
- An explanation of someone’s thought process about how something works in the world (internal symbol of external reality).
- Play a role in cognition, reasoning, decision-making, solving problems, and behavior (a personal algorithm).
- More on Wikipedia.
