Sloww Sunday Newsletter 023 (July 19, 2020) — Nietzsche, The Goal of Life is Meaning, A Human Operating System, & More
Hi friends,
Sloww Sunday is a newsletter focused on slowing down to awaken the art of living.
In a modern world of information overload, it’s timeless wisdom for living well.
1. Sloww Stuff
🆕 “How to Get Rich (without getting lucky)” by Naval Ravikant (Summary & Infographic)
I finally carved out 3.5 hours to listen to this full podcast. Don’t let the title fool you; Naval says it should actually be called “How to Create Wealth.” I had some aha moments while creating this summary. The next step is to synthesize it with ikigai and the hedgehog concept (from Jim Collins) to show how you can make money from your life purpose.
2. Video I’m Watching
📺 Nietzsche and Psychology: How to Become Who You Are
(15 mins | Academy of Ideas on YouTube)
After watching a few intro videos on Nietzsche, I think this is one of the best. I also recently picked up Basic Writings of Nietzsche and am starting with Ecce Homo.
“What does your conscience say? — ‘You shall become the person you are.'” — Nietzsche
3. Podcast I’m Enjoying
🎧 The Goal of Life is Meaning, not Happiness — James Hollis, PhD on Sounds True
(60 mins | Apple | Spotify)
Dr. James Hollis is a Jungian psychoanalyst and the author of 16 books. Two of his books are on my reading list: Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life and Living an Examined Life. This podcast covers: the difference between meaning and purpose, finding resilience during difficult times, how our souls let us know when we’re not on the right path, and more.
“All humans by nature are meaning-seeking, meaning-creating individuals.” — James Hollis
4. Article I’m Reading
📖 One VC Wrote An OS for Her Life
(10 mins | Superorganizers)
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the human “operating system”—how to better understand HumanOS and my own personal KyleOS. I haven’t found many good articles on the topic to date, but this one starts to go in that direction (although it’s more tactical than I’m looking for). When you start thinking about yourself as an operating system, you start realizing that you can give yourself intentional software updates.
“We only have so much mind space. And MariaOS is a space outside of my mind for me to make sure that I’m keeping tabs on what matters to me personally. It’s how I project manage everything in my life — whether it’s work, or other projects. It’s how I stay on top of the things that matter to me.” — Maria Salamanca
5. Quote I’m Contemplating
“But putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune’s control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.”
— Seneca (On the Shortness of Life)
