🆕 9 Money Rules for Living before Dying: “Die With Zero” by Bill Perkins (Book Summary)
This book is based on the premise that “the whole point of money is to have experiences” and “the business of life is the acquisition of memories.” In a nutshell, money spent on experiences gives you memories which you can enjoy forever through “memory dividends.” If you agree with that premise, you’ll like the book! Personally, I don’t really agree with the premise because I don’t think that’s the point of money or how memory works. “So what is GameB? First, it is not ‘GameA’ — the Western Civilization status quo. That’s a good start for those of us who find the status quo a grim place that seems headed for self-destruction. GameB is conceived of ‘What Comes Next’, the social operating system that replaces GameA … In short, the goal of GameB is a metastable society emphasizing human wellbeing built on good values that we will be happy to call home and we will be proud to leave to our descendants.” — Jim Rutt

“Your neurological organization is creating the external world. There is no such thing as light, weight, heat, color, shape—except in terms of the nervous system. From that point of view, you can see your nervous system as evoking the whole universe.” — Alan Watts

💡 New Learning
Emergence & Emergentism
Wikipedia
· Emergence occurs when an entity has properties/behaviors its parts do not have on their own—which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider whole. Seen in nature, philosophy, systems theory, science, and art.
· Emergentism is the belief in emergence (in philosophy), particularly as it involves consciousness and the philosophy of mind (Ex: laws of chemistry emerge from a few laws of physics, biology from chemistry, psychology from biology).
💭 Deep Thought
Life is not being vs doing, or being vs becoming. Life is being, doing, and becoming.
Daniel Schmachtenberger says this is a simple distillation of everything he has learned regarding how to live a meaningful human life:
- Being: appreciate, take in, and enjoy the beauty of life fully.
- Doing: add to the beauty of life (protecting and/or creating beauty).
- Becoming: develop and deepen your capacities to experience the beauty of life (Being) and add to it (Doing).
“Being influences Doing. Doing affects how we are changing and Becoming. Becoming is in turn changing the integrated state of who we are (Being).” — Daniel Schmachtenberger
