🧭 Higher Purpose
Triple Helix of Good Work
Howard Gardner’s Good Project proposes a new model for good work and good citizenship called the “triple helix” or “ENA” (as a play on the double helix of DNA):
- “Over a 10-year period we determined that being a good worker had three components—the Three Es: Excellence, Engagement, and Ethics … If you want to be a good worker, you can’t just be excellent, you can’t just be engaged, and you can’t just be ethical. You need to have those intertwined strands of ENA … The sense of purpose has to take into account not only your own goals and aspirations, but effects on other people.” — Howard Gardner
Triple Helix (or ENA):
- Excellence: good work is technically excellent; the good citizen is excellent and knows their stuff.
- Engagement: good work is personally engaging; the good citizen is engaged and cares about what happens in society (you can’t do good work or citizenship unless you get involved and spend real time with it).
- Ethics: good work is carried out in an ethical manner; the good citizen tries to carry out duties in an ethical way (you can be excellent and engaged, but you can be doing really bad stuff—so an essential component of good work and citizenship is ethics).
The triple helix/ENA is interesting to compare with the three circles of my Ikigai 2.0 model:

☯️ Spiritual Seeing
The Direct Path of Jean Klein
The “direct path” resonates with my direct, lived experience (see more in Sloww Sunday #172). I spent last week immersed in the teachings of Jean Klein (top quotes). I’ve also read his book I Am, and The Book of Listening is on my reading list.
Jean Klein learned the direct path from Atmananda Krishna Menon (top quotes). I’ve read Krishna Menon’s Atma Darshan & Atma Nirvriti and Atmananda Tattwa Samhita, and Notes on Spiritual Discourses (Vol 1-3) is on my reading list.
Jean Klein taught the direct path to Francis Lucille. I’ve read all three of Lucille’s books The Perfume of Silence (⭐️ absolute must read), Truth Love Beauty, and Eternity Now (there will be summaries and a synthesis after Francis’ Wise Walk week).
And, Francis Lucille taught the direct path to Rupert Spira. I’ve also read three of Spira’s books including Being Aware of Being Aware (⭐️ must read), Being Myself, and The Heart of Prayer.

💬 Wise Words
Nice quote on my will and Thy will:
- “The mariner of old said to Neptune in a great tempest, ‘O God! thou mayest save me if thou wilt, and if thou wilt thou mayest destroy me; but whether or no, I will steer my rudder true.'” — Michel de Montaigne
Here’s a paraphrased version via László Polgár:
- “In a great storm, sailors in ancient times invoked Neptune: ‘O God! You will save or destroy me according to your will. But whatever you will, I will steer my ship as necessary!'” — Michel de Montaigne
